These photos feature some of the heaviest shifts in colour I’ve applied when developing my photographs, and in some cases it appears dramatic, but I wanted to use colour to emphasise the emotional and spiritual significance of the day, which celebrated my brother’s ordination as a monk as well as the Thai New Year.
The monks’ robes are a treat to photograph, the ruffles formed in the material allow you to emphasise the shadows as you develop the photo, lending a wonderful depth and richness to the fabric, and in the case of photo number 4 it emphasises a chiaroscuro-like element that encompasses the image in toto.
My favourite photograph here has to be the shoes removed just outside the entrance to the hermitage. It’s a perfectly still scene but it suggests so much motion and community.
